Approaching the Cross: Wonders of the Cosmos and a Hail Mary Save
As we edge closer to Holy Week, I’ve been reflecting on preparation—not the frantic kind, but the wide-eyed, awe-struck variety. You know, those moments when you’re out on a bike ride, cruising down a quiet road, and suddenly an amazing vista stops you in your tracks: the sun dipping low, painting the sky in fiery oranges and pinks, clouds drifting like whispers from heaven. Or gazing down to a distant ocean, with beautiful trees cascading all the way, or cruising through a canopy of greenery on both sides, blue sky peeking above, wind on your face—reciting a Hail Mary and feeling deeply thankful for it all.
Project Hail Mary
With Easter approaching, let’s marvel at the universe’s grandeur and how it points to the cross. And to kick things off, I want to talk about Project Hail Mary (PHM)—that sci-fi thriller where sacrifice, and grace saves the day. Hard science, blended with a frail humanity the galaxy and biblical grace.
In PHM, we see a lone hero rocketing into the unknown on the Hail Mary spacecraft, willing to give everything to save humanity from cosmic doom. It’s packed with positive themes: one person’s sacrifice for the many, echoing Jesus’ ultimate act on the cross. And get this—the lead scientist? Dr. Ryland Grace. The vessel is “filled with grace”! It’s like Andy Weir snuck in a nod to Mary’s intercession, turning a desperate “hail mary” pass into a prayerful plea for divine intervention. As we approach the cross, PHM reminds us that in our own high-stakes moments, grace isn’t just a name—it’s God’s saving power at work.
Majesty and the Creator
Now, zoom out to the cosmos itself. The Big Bang, that explosive birth of everything, echoes Genesis 1:3’s “Let there be light.” Science pegs it at 13.8 billion years ago—a cosmic fireball expanding into stars, galaxies, and us. But does this clash with faith? Not at all—it’s evidence of a masterful Designer. Psalm 8 captures it perfectly:
“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them?”
Hubble shots of swirling nebulae and distant worlds? They’re like God’s Instagram feed, showcasing His infinite creativity. And on those night sky gazes or bike rides through stunning vistas, we feel it—that profound connection, reminding us we’re part of something vast yet intimately crafted.
Do it.
So, how do we prepare our hearts for the cross? Step outside—hop on a bike or go for a drive, look up at the stars, or chase a sunset vista.
Let the wonder sink in. Recite a Hail Mary amid the beauty, thanking God for the trees, the ocean views, the wind-kissed roads. It’s in these moments that science and faith harmonize, pointing to the Creator’s love—a love that culminated in Jesus’ sacrifice.
What do you believe?
Even if you’re not yet a believer in this grand Designer, the universe’s majesty is still extraordinary, a cosmic invitation to ponder.
But if you are, be grateful for this amazing gift—God has filled you with His grace. Peace to you.
Jesus died today a long time ago – for you.
